CRITTER CORNER: Reptile enthusiasts are in demand
Last week when I was in the exotic animal room at the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) I spied Wally, a boa constrictor available for adoption. I watched in fascination, as he rhythmically contracted his mighty jaw muscles to swallow the remaining feet and tail of a thawed rat that had been given to him for his lunch. Even though I had pet rats growing up and have more of an affinity for furry creatures over scaly ones, I could not help but feel a sense of awe.Wally is one of three boa constrictors at the shelter in need of a good home. All three are friendly, curious and like to be handled. Sammy the smallest, ranges between four and five years old. He has been at the shelter the longest, and is a special needs boa, because he has some respiratory issues that require medication. However, if given his meds, he is a very healthy snake. Wally and Stud came into the shelter recently after both were rescued from behind the walls of two separate homes! While we can't determine their ages, they are beautiful, healthy snakes. All three are big, but going to get bigger - maybe about 10 feet long and up to 50 pounds. And, they can live up to 30 years.
We are looking for reptile enthusiasts to help these awesome creatures. But we are also looking for a bit more ... people who understand the commitment of adopting an exotic animal. They aren't cuddly, like dogs and cats, yet like any pet, they require daily attention and activities to keep them stimulated. They have special dietary needs, require a climate controlled environment and space to move around. That means plenty of food and fresh water and a spacious enclosure that simulates the humid, tropical temperature they're used to. You will have to find a veterinarian who specializes in exotic animals, and there are several in our county. If you can provide a home for Sammy, Wally or Stud where they can stay for the rest of their lives, no matter how big they get, call 650-340-7022 ext. 354.
