LOCAL BRIEFS: NDNU soccer falls to San Jose State

The Notre Dame de Namur men's soccer team dropped its season opener to San Jose State 3-0 on Friday.

The Spartans took the lead in the first 10 minutes and added two more goals late in the second half.

The Argos were outshot 26-11 on the game with goalkeepers Sheldon Steenhuis and David Meherg combining for seven saves.

NDNU hosts Humboldt State at 12:30 today.



Santa Clara bows to West Virginia

The 12th-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team defeated No. 10 West Virginia 2-1 in double overtime Friday.

Sophomore Kendra Perry scored the game-winning goal in the 111th minute off an Anessa Patton assist in the Broncos' first game at the Inn at Saint Mary's Soccer Classic on the campus of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

Junior Kiki Bosio, who was sick with strep throat, saw limited action, and coach Jerry Smith's underclassmen stepped up to fill the void the All-WCC forward left. Midfielder Perry added Santa Clara's only goal in regulation, her first collegiate goal. The unassisted goal came in the 50th minute when she scored off a rebound from a free kick save.



Broncos volleyball starts with victory

The Santa Clara volleyball team opened its season with a five-set victory (25-18, 17-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-0) over Utah Valley on Saturday in the second match of the Ute Invitational in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Senior Brittany Lowe led the Broncos with 20 kills. She also had seven digs and three blocks. Anna Cmaylo also posted double-figure kills with 12. Lindsey Davigeadono dished out a match-high 44 assists and two service aces.
