CRITTER CORNER: Tips to consider before adopting a new animal

So you're thinking of getting a dog. Bringing a new animal into your home is an exciting time for sure. Here at the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, we have dogs of all breeds and sizes. While eager to promote animal adoptions, we also want potential adopters to be aware of the 10- to possibly 15-year commitment they could have with their pet. That's 10 to 15 years of providing food, shelter, veterinary care and friendship for your companion animal. Here are a few more things to consider before bring your dog home:

- Does your apartment, condo, or homeowners association allow pets?

- How much time do you spend away from your home? Dogs like regular schedules. Who will care for your dog while you are on vacation?

- Does anyone in your family have allergies? Sometimes people are allergic to certain breeds but have no symptoms with others. Try spending some time with a friend's dog first if you're unsure.

- Besides the cost of food and vet care, there's also the cost of toys and grooming care to think about.

- An accident on the floor is to be expected, especially when an animal is adjusting to a new home. Can you take that in stride?

- Do you have other animals at home?

The few considerations we've raised above are far outnumbered by the many wonderful aspects of sharing one's life with a companion animal. For those who are preparing to get a dog or have recently adopted one, consider attending our Getting to Know Your Dog seminar on Thursday 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. PHS/SPCA has designed this annual class to help people start off on the right "paw" with their new dog. Get advice on:

- Housetraining

- Jumping

- Walking on a leash without pulling

- Mouthiness

- Introductions to animals already in the household

The effects of breed and age on behavior will also be addressed. Please leave your dogs at home. Suggested $10 donation at the door. Held at 12 Airport Blvd., San Mateo. To sign up, call 650-340-7022 ext. 306.
