NORTH TACKLES SOUTH

Los Altos DE Dorricott, QB Young lead charge

SAN JOSE - Los Altos defensive tackle Michael Dorricott broke through to sack South quarterback Ashokkumar Arjun for an 8-yard loss as seconds ticked down in Wednesday night's Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Classic at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium. Dorricott and the North held their ground, coming away with a 21-19 victory. It was the third straight win for the North, which closed the all-time series gap to 17-15-2.

The North had to rally from a 12-0 deficit, the South striking first on a trick play at the 9:32 mark of the second quarter. Lining up for a field goal, holder Tanner Burns threw a shovel pass to Roger Rose Jr., who went untouched around right end for a 17-yard touchdown. AJ Ellis added a 3-yard TD on a sweep with 2:59 left in the half and the South had a two touchdown lead.

St. Francis quarterback Sam Scudellari had all the snaps in the first quarter, then started the second period. The North was stopped at midfield when Nick Kalpin was held to no gain on a fourth-and-one. Scudellari and the rest of the North staff felt Kalpin's forward progress netted the first, but the South took over.

Los Altos quarterback Danny Young took the helm and promptly hit Lynbrook tight end Andy Meunier for 14 yards on a pop pass. Young found Fremont's Kenney Pope for two completions for a combined 18 yards to the South 18. Palo Alto wide receiver Mike Scott then ran a fade pattern down the left sideline and Young put the ball in Scott's breadbasket for a North TD with 13 seconds left in the half.

"I saw their safety was cheating over and Mike had single coverage," Young said. "Anytime Scott gets one-on-one, he's going to make a play. I put it up there and he made the play."

The North's Darnell Green, out of Homestead-Sunnyvale, recovered a South fumble on the second half kickoff, but the North's 41-yard field goal attempt went just left.

Kalpin, who had a couple of good runs early in the game, scored from 4 yards out to put the North up for good at 14-12 with 3:52 left in the third period. The key play was a pass from Anthony Cukar to Trevor Vlay for 25 yards.

Fremont's Daunte Mills, playing at defensive back for the North, caught a tipped ball for an interception at the South 43.

"I'm not sure who tipped it," said Mills, who will play at Yuba City JC. "I saw it up in the air and I went after it."

On the first play of the fourth period, Scudellari sold a pass play beautifully as he gave the ball to Havelock Glen Pomele, who powered through the middle for a 36-yard touchdown.

The South made things exciting when Valley Christian-San Jose's David Henderson gathered in a 24-yard touchdown grab in the end zone from Arjun with 3:17 to play.

Dorricott's late sack was followed by a sack by Matt Turituri, which placed the ball at the South 5.

Mountain View's Shane Cooney was honored as a tri-captain. Cooney and fellow Spartan Arthur Washington made two hard hits that drew raves from the crowd. Washington even picked off a pass on a two-point conversion try.

Young finished the game 5-of-7 for 54 yards. Scudellari finished 3-of-5 for 24 yards.
