Menlo Park kicks off summertime street fest

The city of Menlo Park's 22nd annual Connoisseur's Marketplace on Santa Cruz Avenue kicks off today. It's a festival that has drawn thousands in the past for a taste of live music, cuisine and visual arts.

Participants will snack on an assortment of foods, such as calamari, falafel and sausage jambalaya. Musicians will play over the weekend, including the Megatones, Groove Kings and Double Funk Crunch. And 250 artists will display their wares.

Organized by the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce, the festival also will be a bit greener this year. Chamber president Fran Dehn said vendors are now required to offer either recyclable or biodegradable plates, cups and utensils. From one end of the festival to the other, compost and recycling bins will be placed on the avenue.

"We're definitely trying to make it greener every year," Dehn said.

The Connoisseur's Marketplace runs today and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. An after-hours concert featuring Double Funk Crunch starts at 5:30 p.m. today in Fremont Park.
