Man convicted of transporting teen to U.S. for sex
Antiques dealer faces 30 years in prison
A Santa Clara antiques dealer with two homes in Portugal has been convicted of transporting a teenage boy from the Azores to the United States for sex.John Carvalho Diniz, 58, had promised that if the 16-year-old boy had sex with him in Portugal, he would take him to see his brother in the United States. The 19-year-old brother had also been lured by Diniz to California, but was of legal age, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Once in Santa Clara, the 16-year-old refused to have any more sex with Diniz. He complained to his older brother, who told a counselor, who then called police, said U.S. Attorney spokesman Josh Eaton.
Diniz was convicted Friday of the 2002 crime after a two-week trial.
Diniz faces a maximum 30 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for transporting a minor with intent to engage in illegal sexual activity when he appears for a July 7 sentencing hearing in federal court in San Jose.
