Mountain lion reported
Police searching for big cat in Highlands area
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office issued an alert for the unincorporated Highlands area after receiving a report of a possible mountain lion sighting.A person called the sheriff's office at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday reporting the sighting in the 1700 block of Lexington Avenue, Sgt. Gary Brown said.
The area is a residential neighborhood between Hillsborough and San Mateo that backs up to Interstate Highway 280 and the San Francisco State Fish and Game Refuge.
Two deputies went to the neighborhood to look for the cat, but so far haven't found any trace of it, Brown said.
The sheriff's office is warning residents in the area to be on alert for the mountain lion and not to approach it if they see it. Anyone who sees it should call 911.
